Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I schedule a preventive care visit?
Most patients benefit from a professional cleaning and exam every six months. However, patients with a history of gum disease, frequent cavities, or other ongoing oral health concerns may be recommended to come in more frequently, typically every three to four months. Our Grand Rapids dental team will recommend a schedule based on your individual needs and oral health histor

What is the difference between preventive care and general dentistry?
Preventive dentistry refers specifically to the proactive measures taken to maintain oral health and prevent disease before it develops, including cleanings, exams, X-rays, fluoride treatments, and patient education. General dentistry encompasses a broader range of services, including the diagnosis and treatment of existing dental conditions. Preventive care is the foundation upon which all other dental treatment is built.

Is preventive dental care covered by insurance?
Most dental insurance plans cover preventive care services such as cleanings, exams, and X-rays at little to no cost to the patient, as insurers recognize the long-term value of catching problems early. Coverage details vary by plan, and our front office team will review your benefits before your appointment so you know exactly what to expect. Patients without insurance are welcome to ask about our in-house membership plan, which includes preventive services.

What happens if a problem is found during my preventive visit?
If our team identifies a concern during your exam, we will explain exactly what we found, what it means, and what your treatment options are before anything is scheduled. We believe in giving patients the information they need to make informed decisions about their care, and we never recommend treatment without a clear clinical reason. In many cases, concerns identified during a routine exam can be addressed simply and conservatively precisely because they were caught early.

How can I improve my oral health between visits?
The most impactful things you can do between dental visits are brush thoroughly twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste, floss at least once a day, limit sugary and acidic foods and beverages, stay hydrated, and avoid tobacco in any form. Our team will provide personalized guidance at your preventive visit based on your specific oral health needs and any areas of concern identified during your exam.

Is preventive care important even if my teeth feel fine?
Absolutely. Many of the most common dental conditions, including cavities, gum disease, and oral cancer, develop without any noticeable symptoms in their early stages. By the time pain or visible changes appear, the condition has often already progressed significantly. Routine preventive visits allow our team to detect and address these issues before they cause symptoms, which is always better for your health and your budget.
