How often should I get a dental cleaning and exam?
Most patients benefit from a professional cleaning and exam every six months. However, patients with gum disease, a history of frequent cavities, or other ongoing concerns may need to come in every three to four months. Our Grand Rapids dental team will recommend a schedule that's right for your specific needs.

Does a dental cleaning hurt?
For most patients, a professional cleaning is comfortable and painless. If you have sensitive gums or significant tartar buildup, you may experience mild sensitivity during the cleaning. Let your hygienist know if you're uncomfortable at any point; we can always adjust our approach to make the experience more pleasant.

How long does a cleaning and exam appointment take?
A typical cleaning and exam appointment at Knapp Dental Lodge takes about 60 minutes. If X-rays are needed or additional concerns are identified, the appointment may run a little longer. We always take the time to be thorough rather than rush.

Do you take X-rays at every visit?
Not necessarily. We take X-rays based on your individual health history and risk factors. Many adult patients have X-rays taken once a year, while children or patients with specific concerns may need them more frequently. We use digital X-rays, which significantly reduce radiation exposure compared to traditional film.

What's the difference between a regular cleaning and a deep cleaning?
A routine cleaning (prophylaxis) removes plaque and tartar from above and just below the gumline and is recommended for patients with generally healthy gums. A deep cleaning, also known as scaling and root planing, is a more involved procedure recommended when gum disease is present. During your exam, we'll assess your gum health and let you know which type of cleaning is appropriate for you.

Does Knapp Dental Lodge accept new patients for cleanings and exams?
Yes, we are actively welcoming new patients at our Grand Rapids dental office. We accept a wide range of insurance plans and also offer an in-house membership plan for patients without insurance. Contact our team to schedule your first visit.
